Contemporary Family Garden

Family gardens need special attention. Creating a garden that appeals to all age groups is surprisingly hard. In this plot in Surrey the clients wanted a vibrant family garden where they could entertain but remain within easy sight of their children.

We divided the garden into four distinct areas. At the far end we sited a vegetable garden with a greenhouse for everyone to enjoy; a formal rose garden shielded this area from view from the house and led to a wide lawn area, with a shaded spot beneath a mature English oak providing space for play equipment. The area closest to the house was designated as a social space.

Large planting beds worked to divide the zones in the garden. We surrounded the new dining terrace with low-level planting which acted as a gorgeous buffer from the children’s play equipment and provided a space where adults could relax whilst keeping a watchful eye on the children. We made sure to offset the dining area so that the view from the house was of verdant planting rather than dining furniture.

A neighbouring hedge worked as a great backdrop for the low-maintenance planting which was a soft mix of silvers and blues, playing on texture and form. We chose blue Indian limestone paving and setts, blended with silver footpath gravel, to complement the planting.
