RHS Chelsea Flower Show 2019 Warners Distillery Garden

Designed as a Show Garden for RHS Chelsea in 2019, this garden was inspired by the beautiful natural landscape that is home to the garden’s sponsor, Warner’s Distillery, in Northamptonshire.

The setting, characterised by undulating countryside punctuated by natural springs and aquifers, is interrupted by dramatic terraces and ditches where a grand manor house once stood. To reflect this, we designed multiple water features that ran quietly through the garden bringing gentle arcs and streams in different areas and created a linear pavilion at its centre, echoing traditional dry-stone walling techniques and with two large cantilevered roofs.  The build was followed by Sophie Raworth and BBC and featured throughout the televised coverage of the show.   The copper gin still at Warners’ Falls Farm is called ‘Curiosity’.

To the front, a sheltered seating area was set amongst a garden of ornamental planting in a relaxed Mediterranean-style which blended into three further planting zones, all designed to attract birds, insects, bees and butterflies. These included a textured wildflower turf and a swathe of native hedgerow underplanted with ferns and grasses.

To complete the garden, we crowned the cantilevered roofs with Sedums, Euphorbias and Thyme to create a vibrant living roof.

A simple palette of materials including limestone, copper and glass created a harmonious balance and reflected the heritage of the local landscape.
