Rose Garden, Lymington

By removing a group of garages and an area of hard standing, we were able to create a secluded courtyard garden at this home in the centre of Lymington.

The plot was attached to a striking period property and we felt it should be complemented with an ordered terrace and lawn area to give the garden a strong sense of formality. We introduced a stilt hedge to define the new garden boundary and create a peaceful, private space in which to relax.

A series of soft, colourful borders were designed to enclose the circular terrace using a planting palette of climbing roses, jasmine and early summer and winter flowering clematis for colour, scent and plenty of romance. The pleached hedging, which added a strong structural layer to the garden, was softened with underplanting of shrubs and perennials to add texture and interest to the formal lawn area.

By combining a mix of hard landscape materials we were able to add definition to each of the areas within the garden. Close to the house, we chose a pale sandstone for the terrace to echo the period detailing of the property. Towards the end of garden, we bordered the lawn in a terracotta brick path to add a sense of formality. The same bricks were used to edge the circular terrace and create a pair of raised beds, creating a sense of movement and balanced repetition throughout the space.

Our clients were delighted with the final transformation.
